『よろしくお願いします』って英語でなんて？～桂サンシャイン落語を徹底解説～

先日英語で『よろしく』を日本人より上手に訳した桂三輝(かつらサンシャイン)さんの落語英語をFacebookで紹介した所、オモロイ、なるほど♡っていう意見があり、それと同じく『知りたいけど英語が分からない』『聞き取れない』って声も頂いたので、今回は英語で『よろしく』をこの落語を通して徹底解説していきますよー♪

『よろしく』の意味

めっちゃ便利な日本語『よろしく』。

よく使うけど、どんな意味があるのか、国語辞典で調べてみると、

他の文章は後で解説するとして、ここまで【よろしく】を上手く英訳した人はいないと思う。

これが日本のニュアンスまで含めた英訳だと思います。

in advance…前もって、予め

for your future kindness to me…あなたがこれから私に親切にしてくれることを

繋げて直訳すると、

あなたがこれから私に親切にしてくれることに、前もってお礼します。

意訳すると、

これから私に親切にして下さることに感謝します。

こんな感じ。

他の訳し方

使う場面によって違うけど、

●初めまして、よろしくお願いします。

Nice to meet you.

※初めましてがそもそもNice to meet youだから、『よろしくお願いします』が言えてない気がするけど、英語にはその部分もニュアンスとして含まれてます。

●その仕事やっといてねーよろしく。

Please do this work(job), thank you～.

●ご両親によろしく伝えてね。

Say hello to your parents.

約７分ちょいの動画を文章書きにしてみたので、サンシャインさんの英語何言ってるか知りたい人はどーぞ♡(長文です)

I’d like to show all the Japanese in people audience when I performing in London, when i performing of Broadway in New York, when I performing around the world, I am not just giving people the light version of Japanese culture that I really bring my audience to deeper understanding of beauty Japanese culture, Japanese language, Japanese grammar all this.

ロンドン公演、NYでの公演、世界のあちこちで公演していますが、公演に来て下さってる日本人のお客様に、私は日本の文化を軽く伝えているのではなく、この美しい日本の文化・言語・文法等深い部分まで理解してもらえるよう話をしている所を見せたいです。

I really the most important thing for me Japanese people in the audience “Oh, Sunshine he is doing good job” “That’s good Rakugo”, “His representation of Japanese culture really getting the deep places.” I want to show you all.

私にとって一番大切なことは、日本のお客様に『サンシャインはようやっとるなー』『これは良い落語や』『サンシャインの日本文化はホンマに深い所まで表現しとる』と思ってもらうこと。

When I perform in London, I teach a little bit of Japanese, do you know the world Hello in Japanese？ Everybody know? I know some of you know. At least half of Japanese, right? say “Konnichiwa” Why do you so quiet? Don’t be shy.

ロンドン公演の時、ちょっとだけ日本語を教えています。日本語でHelloは何と言うか皆さん知っていますか？もちろん何名かは知ってますよね？　半分は日本のお客様だし、ね？　『こんにちは』って言ってみてー。何でそんなに静かなの？恥ずかしがらないでね。

Do you know the word “Thank you”? Yeah good Arigatoh!

『Thank you』はどう言うか知ってますか？　そう！ありがとう。

So the thing, everybody knows Konnichiwa everybody knows Arigatoh, I would like you to teach more important word than Konnichiwa, more important word than Arigatoh. We use it more than Hello, more than Thank you in Japan.

それでね、皆が知ってるのは『こんにちは』『ありがとう』なんですが、日本で『こんにちは』や『ありがとう』より大切でより多く使われている言葉を教えたいです。

And the word is Yoroshiku.

それが、『よろしく』。

Very difficult word to translate into English. But it’s the word that you use when you meet someone first time say Yoroshiku, or when start a day of work together say Yoroshiku, or when I begin the story in front of my audience say Yoroshiku.

めっちゃ英訳するのが難しい。でも、初対面の人と会う時にも使うし、仕事の時にも使うし、お客さんの前でパフォーマンスする時もこのヨロシクを使います。

So I thought very  long and hard but how to translate this word encapsulate all the very uses this word has and I come up this solution Japanese people you can back me up here.

どうやったらヨロシクを本来使われている意味として要約しつつ英訳できるかを考えました。そしてこう思いついたので日本人の皆さんサポートしてね。

I think the word Yoroshiku means in English I thank you now in advance for your future kindness to me.

私が思うに、ヨロシクは『この先私に親切にして下さることに前もって感謝します』という意味だと思います。

It took me a long time go with that because if you if anyone start Japanese you see second or third page of Japanese text book say Yoroshiku means nice to meet you.

こう考えるのにめっちゃ時間がかかりました。日本語の教科書の２ページ目か３ページ目に『よろしく』って出てくるけど、その意味はいつも『初めまして』だから。

And this is it’s used that way sometimes but oversimplification.

こういう意味で使われることもあるんだけど、ちょっと単純化しすぎかも。

That’s only cover one of the uses. And so the thing is Japanese culture way work is this.

これは一部の意味でしかない。日本の文化ではこういう風に使ってます。

If I meet you for the first time in Japan, I know in the future our relationship you are going to do something kind for me. And I’m thanking you know in advance for the future kindness.

もし日本であなたに初めて会ったら、今後私たちの人間関係を良くするために、あなたは私に親切にしてくれますよね。そして今予めその親切心に御礼申し上げております。※現在進行形で言うてるのがポイント

So in Japan, you put a little pressure on the other person. ..to be kind. Definitely has little bit weight to it. It’s a little bit passive aggressive, right?

だから日本では他人にちょっと圧力をかけているのです(笑)。。。親切にするために。ちょっと重くて、攻撃的な感じでしょ？

I assume now that you are going to be kind to me future I’m thanking you now that how it works in japan. So same things we start the day work together, right? In the morning say Yoroshiku. I know the during the work day, you are going to help some point I’m thanking you now in advance for your future kindness, right?

『あなたが将来私に親切にしてくれることに今感謝します』という意味で日本で使われてると仮定します。じゃあ、同じことが仕事で使う時にも言えるよね？朝『よろしく』と言ったら、あなたは仕事中どっかで手助けしてくれるから、それに対して前もっての私は今お礼を言ってるんだよね？

So you can see already that  nice to meet you doesn’t work. Nice to meet you you say in the morning “Kyo ichinichi yorumade Yoroshikune” something like that right?

だからもうお気付きかと思いますが、『初めまして』という英訳は合わない。初めましてというのは朝『今日一日夜までよろしくね』みたいな感じの時でしょ？

If you translate that way “Today I”ll be happy to meet you for the first time ”many times through the day. It’s wired. No. Yoroshiku, right? It’s thanking you now in advance for this kindness.

もし初めましてと言う風に訳すなら、『今日初めてお会いできて嬉しいです』と一日何度も言うのは変、おかしい。それはヨロシクの意味じゃないよね？この意味は、やっぱり『前もってあなたの親切心に感謝します』です。

Same for me a performer. I am going to say some funny stories now for next half hour or so. And you are going to laugh at my funny stories. And there will be a time from experience where you will be laughing even though you don’t necessary think it funny. Out of kindness to me the performer and I’m thanking you now in advance for that kindness.

同じことがパフォーマーの私にも言えます。今から３０分ほど面白い話をします。そしてあなたは私のオモシロ話に笑いますね。そして私の経験から言うと、特に面白いと思う必要もないのに笑ってくれるでしょう。私パフォーマーに親切だから、今前もってその親切心に御礼申し上げております。

Here is the thing, in Japanese Yoroshiku as probably you assume on it’s own just by itself, it’s not polite enough.

もう一つ、皆様もそう思ってらっしゃるかもしれませんが、日本語で『よろしく』という単語単体では、丁寧には聞こえないですね。

Now I give you quick Japanese lesson here if you want to make any Japanese word or phrase more polite, you have 3 options  open to you.

では今から簡単な日本語レッスンをしてみましょう。もし、日本語の単語やフレーズを丁寧に言いたい場合、３つの方法があります。

No.1…raises states level of the other person you are talking to.

１つ目、話し手を敬って話す方法。

No.2…lower your own  states level

２つ目、自分を謙って話す方法。

No.3…raises states level of the other person at the same time lower your own  states level

３つ目、相手を敬うと同時に自分を謙って話す方法。

So you wanna say Yoroshiku more politely, you say “Yoroshiku Onegaishimasu”. I humbly  thank you now in advance for your future kindness.You see i’m going humble and I’m going down and widening social gap between us. Therefor being polite to you. Very simple system.

もし『よろしく』をもっと丁寧に言いたいなら、『よろしくお願いします』だね。意味としては『謙遜して今予め今後のあなたの親切心に感謝します。』私が謙遜して低くなるので、社会的地位のギャップが生まれる。これがあなたに対して礼儀があるということ。めっちゃ簡単なシステム。

Next one more polite than Yoroshiku is Yoroshiku Onegai Itashimasu. I humbly  thank you now in advance for your future great kindness. So now the kindness I’m putting pressure on you to do for me in the future  going up to great and i’m still going down to humble. Widening this social gap between us being more polite. Very simple sistem.

次はさらに丁寧な表現で『よろしくお願いいたします』があります。意味は『(謙遜して)あなたの今後の素晴らしい親切心に予め感謝します』って感じだから、私があなたにさっきよりもっと親切にしてくれるよう、プレッシャーをかけているのが分かりますね。相手を敬いつつ、自分を謙った言い方だから、社会的ギャップが広がってより礼儀正しい表現です。めっちゃ簡単なシステム。

Next one more polite that would be Yoroshiku Goshidonohodo  Onegai Moushiagemasu. I hope I’m humble enough to except your esteem kindness and teaching. “Goshido” is teaching. So now I’m raising all level of my teacher and I’m still going down to level of your student. Therefore widening gap between us being more polite to you.

そして次はさらに丁寧な表現で『よろしくご指導お願い申し上げます』があります。意味としては『(充分謙遜して)、あなたの親切心に対して尊敬すると同時に指導もお願いします』。ご指導は”教える”という意味です。なので、先生を最上級に敬い、そして自分を生徒レベルまで謙った言い方なので、社会的ギャップがもっと広がり、より丁寧な表現になります。

I’m not counting or learning anything in particular from you today,OK? This is just the way to make Japanese more polite.

今日は皆様から特に何か学ぼうとかしてる訳じゃないですからね、よろしいですか？これはただ日本語をより丁寧に表現する方法ですからね。

And the most polite form This is Yoroshiku Goshido Gobentatsu nohodo Onegai Moushiagemasu. Translate directly  into English is please teach me and hit me with a whip. So you’ve being hit with a whip in Japan you know you’ve been very very polite.

そして一番丁寧な表現は『よろしくご指導ご鞭撻のほどお願い申し上げます』。直訳すると、教えて下さい、そして鞭で打って下さい』となるので、日本で鞭で打たれたら、あなたは相手に対してものすごく礼儀正しいということ 😆 笑。

“Goshido” I told you  is teaching, “Gobentatsu” is difficult Kanji but written whip and hit. As I surprise first time heard myself I don’t want to misrepresent Japanese culture here, OK? I’m not trying to say Japanese people go to each other every day “Goshido Gobentatsu ne””Goshido gobentatsu””Yoroshiku ne””Goshido gobentatsu”. Does Very very formal. But formal occasion it is used.

“ご指導”はさっきも言ったけど、“教える”という意味で、“鞭撻”は漢字で難しいけど、“鞭で打つ”ということ。初めてこの言葉を聞いた聞いた時、ビックリしました。日本の文化の説明を誤って伝えたくないので、それは分かってね？私は日本人同士が毎日『ご指導ご鞭撻ね』『ご指導ご鞭撻』『よろしくね』『ご指導ご鞭撻』と互いに毎回言っているよと言っているわけじゃない。これはとてもフォーマルな時だけ。でもフォーマルな場面では今でも使われているんです。

First time I heard is wedding. And the father of the bride giving a speech. And the speech in Japanese “Minasama  Uchino Musume wa Iroiroto Gomeiwaku Okakeitashimasuga, Douka kongotomo Yoroshiku Goshido Gobentatsu  nohodo Onegai Moushiagemasu.”And Holy smoke that sounds very cool but I was still learning Japanese at the time took all down looked all up in Japanese-English dictionary and I was very surprised at English translation that came out.

私が初めてこの言葉を聞いたのは、結婚式の時。新婦の父親がスピーチした時でした。そのスピーチでは日本語で『皆様、うちの娘は色々ご迷惑をおかけすると思いますが、どうか今後ともご指導ご鞭撻のほどよろしくお願い申し上げます。』というもの。なんじゃこりゃーめっちゃカッコいい表現!!と思ったけど、まだその時日本語を勉強中で全部分からなかっただから、日英辞典を読みあさりました。そしてこの意味訳を知ったんです。

Ladies and Gentleman gather here today. My daughter is going to cause you all big problems in the future. Please teach her and hit her with a whip!!

【ここがオチ】

レディース＆ジェントルマン、今日ここにお集まり頂いた皆様。私の娘は将来ご迷惑をかけるかもしれません。その時はご指導と鞭打ちを♡
